Polish Language Certificate – how to get a B1 or B2 Certificate
Obtaining a Polish language certificate is an important step for many foreigners — whether you plan to stay in Poland permanently, advance your career, or study at a Polish university.

What is a Polish Language Certificate?
A Polish as a foreign language certificate is an official document confirming your language proficiency at a specific CEFR level (A1–C2).
Certification exams are organized by authorized examination centers and supervised by the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language.
The certificate is officially recognized by government institutions, universities, and employers in Poland.
Polish B1 Certificate
The B1 certificate is the most commonly chosen level among foreigners. It is especially popular because it confirms intermediate Polish language proficiency and is required when applying for: Polish citizenship and a permanent residence permit.
A B1 certificate confirms that you can communicate comfortably in many everyday situations, such as: restaurants, shops, government offices, work environments and doctor appointments. You understand most texts encountered in everyday life and can follow Polish radio and television. You are also expected to understand and use various grammatical structures, including: past, present, and future tenses, imperative and conditional forms and declination of nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and numerals.
Polish B2 Certificate – requirements and exam scope
B2 represents an upper-intermediate level of proficiency.
At this level, you can:
- understand more complex texts and conversations;
- discuss a wide range of topics, including abstract subjects;
- write both short and longer texts, such as essays, reviews, and formal applications;
- use more advanced grammatical structures, including passive voice and participles.
The B2 certificate is especially important for foreigners planning to study at Polish universities.
It is also highly valuable if you want to build a career in Poland and communicate fluently in professional settings.
How to obtain a Polish Language Certificate?
The most important step is preparing properly for the exam. As a Polish language teacher, I have already helped dozens of students prepare for certification exams. So far, every one of them has passed — with strong results. In my individual lessons, you will: learn effective exam strategies, practice all required language skills and focus on areas that need the most improvement.
From a formal perspective, you first need to register for the exam through an official examination center. After registering and taking the exam, you receive your certificate a few months later.

Polish Certification Exam Structure
The Polish language certification exam consists of two parts: a written exam and an oral exam (regardless of the level). The written part assesses language skills such as listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar. The oral part evaluates your communication skills, although the types of tasks vary depending on the level. For example, at the B1 level, there are three tasks: describing a picture, giving a short presentation on a given topic, and having a brief dialogue with the examiner.
Duration of the written exam | Duration of the oral exam | Passing score | |
A1 | Max. 120 min | Max. 10 min | At least 50% in both parts |
A2 | Max. 160 min | Max. 10 min | At least 50% in both parts |
