What is the Polish language exam for foreigners?

The Polish as a foreign language exam is an official test designed to assess all of your language skills. The exams are organized by certified examination centers operating under the supervision of the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language.

What does the Polish language exam test?

At every level, the Polish certification exam consists of two sections: a written part and an oral part.

The written section assesses:

  • Listening comprehension (A1–C2)
  • Reading comprehension (A1–C2)
  • Recognition of grammatical structures in texts (A2 only)
  • Grammatical accuracy (B1–C2)
  • Written expression (A1–C2)

The oral section assesses communication skills. Tasks vary depending on the level. For example, at B1 level, the oral exam includes three types of tasks: describing a picture, speaking about a given topic and a short dialogue with the examiner.

The A1 and A2 certification exams consist of both a written and an oral part. The written part lasts up to 120 minutes (A1) or up to 160 minutes (A2). B1 Polish language exam

The B1 certification exam is the most commonly chosen level. A B1 certificate is required for obtaining a permanent residence permit and Polish citizenship. Passing this exam confirms that you can: communicate comfortably in Polish, understand longer spoken and written texts and write both short and longer texts.

The written part lasts up to 190 minutes and assesses: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammatical accuracy and written expression. The oral part lasts up to 15 minutes. To pass the B1 certification exam, you must score at least 50% in both sections.

B2 and higher levels

Polish certification exams at B2, C1, and C2 levels are intended for learners with advanced language skills who can communicate fluently and confidently. If you plan to: study in Poland, work in higher-level professional positions or develop your career and gain an advantage in the job market — then a B2+ level exam may be the right choice for you. These exams have a similar structure to lower levels, but the written and oral parts are longer. To pass, you must score at least 60% in both sections.
